George Washington Jr., affectionately known as "Billy," passed away peacefully at his home on September 9, 2026, at the age of 86. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose life and memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Born to the late George and Fannie Washington of Hopewell, VA, George was preceded in death by Frances Johnson; his sister, Charlie Washington; his brother, Ricky Washington; his son; and his grandson, Kennedy Green.
George was united in marriage to his devoted and beloved wife of 36 years, Mary Washington, with whom he shared many cherished memories.
George was a faithful and devoted member of First Baptist City Point of Hopewell, VA, until his declining health. After 38 years of dedicated service, George retired from Honeywell, formerly known as Allied Chemical.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Nina W Joyner of Midlothian, VA, and Joyce Washington of Hopewell, VA; his son, Michael Washington (Alisha) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and three stepchildren, Brenda Powell of Chester, VA, Terry Osbourne of Hopewell, VA, and Andrew Powell (Beverlynn) of Prince George, Va.
He also leaves to cherish his memory his grandchildren: Brandon Washington, Milo Washington, Maria Chevelle, Mia Washington, Jerrell Powell, Atiya Moore, Tomesia Tucker, Brandi White (Triston), Amiracle Powell, Brena Osbourne, Bryce Osbourne (Anjanette), Brene’ Osbourne, and Anjl Powell; siblings, Christene Teasley (Hopewell, Va) and Betty Washington (Hopewell, Va); two sisters-in-law, Ernestine Bracey (Andrew) and Peggy Washington; brother-in-law, Bishop Al Pope (Joanne); and daughter-in-law, Roslyn Washington; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Among those especially devoted to George were his granddaughter, Brene Osbourne, affectionately known as "Snooki," and his devoted friends, James Patterson and John Hayes.
Special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their service and to Shashonda Martin Nixon and Antionette Coleman for the care they provided as his caregivers.
George's life, love, and legacy will remain in the hearts of his family and friends for generations to come.
Services for Mr. Washington will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the First Baptist Church City Point, 1117 Pierce Street, Hopewell, VA 23860. Burial will follow at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens, 11302 Merchants Hope Rd, Hopewell, VA. Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 12 Noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel.
